18 Jan 2010 - MENS 1 FINAL WINTER REPORT
Mens 1 have finally finished all Winter fixtures – it seemed to rain every Wednesday in November! In a very tight league we are likely to finish a respectable 4th and just one point off 2nd place. We should be proud of this but it is actually a little bit disappointing because of the excellent start we made. Two final matches to report on. Against Newmarket 1, Chad, AndyS, Kevin and Dean fought out a close match which finished in a 4-4 draw. A win in the last match could have seen us jump into 2nd place. Chad, AndyS, Sacha, and Ping were playing for Cambourne but David Lloyd 2 put out a very strong team with a couple of excellent players. Unfortunately a one-sided match ended in a 7-1 defeat for Cambourne. So we finish the season about 4th (still a couple of other matches left between other clubs) with 3 wins, 2 defeats, and 2 draws. My thanks to all eight players who represented the team in the league, there really were some memorable matches and performances. In order of most sets played: Chad McVann, Andy Smith, Kevin Clarke, Ben Byron, Ping Ooi, Dean Harper, Sasha Vucetic, Andy Barker..... Report by Ben Byron – Winter Captain

30 Nov 2009 - A MATCH OF FOUR HALVES
Mens1 had their closest encounter yet away at Exning. Unfortunately in the very first game Ben served and got a re-occurrence of the back injury from the summer – so he couldn’t run, bend down, or serve properly. Thanks to a lot of winning shots from Chad, they somehow managed to get a set against each pair and draw both the matches. New pairing Kevin and Sacha drew their first match against Exning 2nd pair. Then there were absolute heroics in the final set when Kevin and Sacha, a set and 2-5 down against Exning 1st pair, heroically came all the way back to take the set 7-5, and draw the fourth match. With all matches halved we earned a draw, and therefore a point, against all the odds! We are currently second in the league with two matches left to play.

12 Nov 2009 - MENS 1 BEAT ST NEOTS 2
Last night as we drove to St Neots the rain started but we “manned-up” and got straight on the courts for some good warm-up while the home team stayed in the shelter of the clubhouse! Fortunately the rain stopped at 7pm and the long warm-up seemed to help us as we hit the ground running and won the first four sets quickly with three at 6-0. At the end of the night Chad and Andy had won all four of their sets comfortably. Ping and Ben did well against the St Neots 2nd pair but struggled a bit against their 1st pair and dropped one set. Cambourne won 7 sets to 1 for our third win this season – well played everyone.

5 Nov 2009 - MENS 1 STARTS SEASON WELL
We’ve made a really good start to the winter season in Division 3 despite fielding 7 different players, and having DaveC out injured. First match was away at Histon1 where Chad and Ben won four sets and Kevin and AndyB (stepping in at the last minute) won three out of four to give us a 7-1 win! Next match was home against a Shelford3 team who were just too strong. AndyS and Chad didn’t manage to capture any sets and Ben and Kevin got only one, so 7-1 again but this time a defeat. Last night was a really closely contested encounter with Gransdens2 with two new pairings for our team; played in the cold and sometimes rain! Kevin and AndyS played really well to win all four of their sets, including two close 7-5’s. Ping and Dean managed to grab their first set before going down on the next three. It was enough for a 5-3 victory on the night and gives us two match wins out of three so far this winter. Four more matches to go…

26 Jul 2009 - MEN OUT OF GRAYS CUP
Last week Cambourne Men got knocked out by last year’s champions, Phennards. Unfortunately the grass courts weren’t marked out so we had to play on their astro. Dave C and Ben dropped their first set of the season but rallied to win the next three. Chad and Kevin couldn’t get on the score sheet. So sadly we went down 5-3.

4 Jul 2009 - GRAYS CUP LATE NIGHT DRAMA
Cambourne Men played away at Buckden (a division 3 team) in the second round of the Grays Cup knockout and the evening ended in dramatic fashion. On a balmy summer’s evening Ben and Kevin won 3 sets and Chad and Carl 1 set meaning the match was tied at 4-4. Since the Grays Cup is a knockout then the winner had to be determined by selecting one player from each pair to contest a Championship tie-break (up to 10 points). It was really nerve-wracking but Chad and Ben fought back from 6-4 down to finally triumph 10-8 and book our place in the quarter finals!

27 Jun 2009 - MENS 1 WIN THE LEAGUE!
Cambourne Mens 1 continued their rise up the Cambridgeshire Leagues with another successful season, and secured the top spot in Division 6 with a gutsy draw on the final day of the season away at Huntingdon. The regular team, consisting of Dave C, Chad, Dave O or Carl and Ben or Kevin won the first five matches of the season. Going in to the last match, away at Huntingdon who were also unbeaten, we had to avoid defeat to win the league. With two regulars unavailable, Stewart and Ian were drafted in at literally the last minute (thanks Ian)…and found it hard against strong opposition. Dave and Chad, however, pulled out a brilliant performance to win all four sets, crucially saving set points on the way! So the match was drawn and the league won. This meant that Dave C, always in the 1st pair but with different partners, played and won every set of the season - a fantastic personal achievement. Next year the dizzy heights of division 5 – we can’t wait!
